     Thomas Jefferson Russell was a farmer. He performed military service between 1861 and 1863 enlisting in the Confederate Army as a member of the Clarke Calvary participating in many battles during the early years of the war. He fell on 9 June 1863 at the battle of Brandy Station, shot through the head. His comrades seeing no signs of life left him for dead. He was later found alive by Federal troops. He spent the remainder of the war in the hospital. He was able to recover enough to go back and work his farm. His condition did fade ultimately to paralysis and death.
